Anh căn bản- Basic English là các từ viết tắt của B(British),
A(American), S(Scientific), I(International) và C(Commercial) do C.K
Ogden sáng lập từ năm 1926 và được chính phủ Anh, Mỹ ủng hộ, mua bản
quyền. Mục đích của nó nhằm học nhanh (để đi định cư, công tác gấp ở
nước ngoài...), tránh học lan man những từ không cần thiết để người mới
học có thể giao tiếp tiếng Anh đơn giản trong vòng từ 30- 50 giờ học. Anh ngữ căn bản chỉ sử dụng 850 từ, trong khi từ điển có thể chứa từ 100.000 từ đến hơn 500.000 từ (entries). Trong số 850 từ căn bản ấy, có 600 từ chỉ đồ vật và sự việc (danh từ), 150 từ chỉ tính chất, đặc điểm (tính từ) và 100 từ chỉ thao tác, hành động (động từ).
Thực ra thì với bất kỳ ngôn ngữ nào thì
có khoảng 1.000 từ là có thể giao tiếp trong sinh hoạt hàng ngày, 3.000
từ là có thể đọc báo ở mức trung bình, khó. Vì vậy việc học thuộc lòng
và biết cách sử dụng 850 từ vựng căn bản dưới đây là hết sức cần thiết.
Nó là nền tản vững chắc để người học tiếp tục học sâu rộng hơn về ngôn
ngữ này trong tương lai.
Tôi không giải thích nghĩa của 850 từ
này bằng tiếng Việt mà để người học tự tra từ điển- đây là cách tốt nhất
